Hi everyone
So, I have finally relocated to Dallas, TX. I have been here almost a month now and I thought I would post a few pros and cons on Dallas life and how it has been thus far.
Pros first! The City is huge and tons of great shopping. I love that you can find whatever you need here. It seems that even small businesses can thrive here in Dallas. The city is growing so fast and thousands of people are moving here every week. Right around the corner from my house I found a resale second hand store that had some really cool high end items like LV, Tory Burch, Prada etc. The prices were very reasonable and they get new items in Daily. I can see myself now running there every other day like a crackhead looking for a retail fix.
Next, the job market is huge and thriving here in Dallas. Everyone that I know that relocates to Dallas has found a really good job here and has always considered it an upgrade to whatever city they came from. The pay is always higher and there is room for advancement.
There are so many restaurants in Dallas and surrounding areas that you probably can literally eat at a different restaurant every day for at least a year. I’m not even kidding. Happy hours thrive here and it’s really a “thing” here. Oh and let me not forget about Brunches. They are really a “thing” here too. People take their brunches very seriously.
The night life is OK I guess. I am well beyond the age of clubbing every weekend buy I do like to get out and hear some great live music. There are tons of night clubs and bars with live music here in the city. Just look up/google your genre of music and you will find an event. I personally use Meetup.com or Dallasblack.com for information on what’s happening in the city.
Now, the cons! Traffic is by far the worse here. I drive 45 mins to work in the morning and 60 mins home every day. My home is like 20 miles but the traffic is just that congested. Traffic lights seem to last like 5 minutes for each stop. It is brutal and miserable and makes me very agitated daily. Also, I drive a stick shift. Standard shift cars are not stop and go friendly. I suggest you live close to your job if you can. I plan to move closer to my job in a couple of months.
Next, I need to talk about these tolls. I have heard a lot of horror stories about toll bills and how expensive they can be. I was told that I need to get a toll tag and that it cuts your toll bill in half if you have one. I have not gotten one so I cannot say for sure yet. But, I think daily you may just spend close to $10 a day in toll fees. That adds up. Again, another reason to live and work near your job.
Lastly is the dating scene. It seems very hard to meet guys in the city because the city is so big. Everything is 30 to 45 minutes away from you when venturing outside of your area and most times you just don’t want to leave your area. Most times it is just easier to stay home and do nothing. I have taken to online dating and just meeting up for a date is serious work. Usually that person lives so far and no one wants to drive far from the area they live in. You can meet people at a grocery store or bar but to me that is not realistic. I have had friends to say usually when they go on a date, someone they know has played match maker and they usually have a horror story behind the hook-up. My niece who is 25 talks about how she is bored all the time and can’t meet anyone she meshes with and she is 25 and gorgeous. For myself though, I will keep hope alive and my fingers crossed for a nice fella to woo me before I give up entirely. But I am just saying it seems to be hard but I won’t call it impossible just yet.
Well there you have it my pros and cons of living in Dallas. Maybe this list will change but I don’t foresee that happening anytime soon. Maybe I will do an update in about 6 months.
